Linksys Router Setup Setting up Linksys routers with a Wire Internet Service can be arranged either by entering the installation CD or manually configuring your router’s settings. QUICK TIP: If you are doubtful about the variety of Internet connection you have, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Linksys Router Setup
To set up a Linksys router, you require to complete four (4) methods using the computer that is registered to your ISP:
i. Checking that Internet connection is active
ii. Connecting devices
iii. Verifying the router’s LEDs Lights
iv. Setup a Linksys router for Cable Internet connection
QUICK TIP: To reconfigure an earlier used router, reset the router to factory defaults. To do this, press the Reset switch of your router for 10 seconds. The Reset button is generally located at the rear of the router.
Confirming that the Internet connection is working
Attach the computer to the Cable modem with Ethernet cable. If your computer is receiving an Internet connection, you may continue to the next step. Otherwise, talk your ISP.
Some Cable modems have their USB ports set up by the ISP to give your computer the Internet connection. If the cable connection is over a USB port, you will not be capable of going online using an Ethernet connection. Contact your ISP to produce the Ethernet port of the modem configured.
Connecting devices together
In this example, we use Linksys E4200
Attach the Cable modem to the router’s WAN or Internet port.
Attach a computer to one of the router’s numbered ports (1, 2, 3 or 4). If you are working on a wireless computer, you will require to connect it first with an Ethernet cable.
NOTE: In this example, a computer is attached to port number 2.
Attach the power charger of your router to the power socket.
Reviewing the router’s LEDs
After attaching the devices, verify the LED lights on the front board of the router. Assure that the lights matching to the ports where the Ethernet cables are connected to are lit.
Configuring a Linksys router for Cable Internet connection
Locate the router’s web-based setup console. Start any web browser such as Internet Explorer®, Mozilla Firefox® or Safari®. Enter “192.168.1.1” in the search bar then press [Enter].
You will be asked for your login credentials. Leave the User name field empty and enter “admin” in the Password field then click OK.
NOTE: If you have got an error message after typing your router’s password, this indicates that the password entered is wrong. Try reaching the router’s web-based setup page repeatedly and enter the right password. On the Setup tab, click MAC Address Clone.
NOTE: A Media Access Control (MAC) Address is a different identifier pre- allotted to the network adapter of the computer. Most Cable ISPs use this for authentication so clients can establish an Internet connection.
Thus, for Linksys router to manage with your ISP, you have to allow the MAC Address Clone feature. This will let your ISP to verify the router as the computer with the registered MAC Address.
Select Enabled then click on Clone My PC’s MAC.
Click. Save Settings

Once the MAC Address Clone characteristic is enabled, Internet status should be running. To review the Internet Connection status, follow the steps here.
NOTE: Guarantee that the Internet Connection Type is set to Automatic Configuration – DHCP.
Click on the Status label.
Review the Internet IP Address. If it has numbers, this means the router has been appropriately configured. If the Internet IP Address states are showing up 0.0.0.0, click on Release IP Address then the Renew IP Address switches.
NOTE: For Wireless-B and Wireless-G routers, click on the DHCP Release and DHCP Renew buttons.
You should now be ready to access the Internet. If not, power cycle the modem, the router, then the computer.
IMPORTANT: Power cycling the cable modem should be performed with caution. Most Wire modems are bundled with Cable TV and phone link. Any Cable modems also have backup batteries that may prevent it from being powered OFF even if the power adapter is disconnected from it. Refer to your ISP for specific guidance on power cycling the modem.
To make the power cycle process:
Power OFF the modem.
While the modem is OFF, unplug the power adapter from the router and shut down your computer.
Power ON the modem and wait for its lights to go even.
Power ON the router, then wait for its lights to go steady, then turn ON the computer.
Your Internet connection should now be working. If you’re still unable to go online, contact your ISP to reconfigure the modem.
